Rational Acoustics RTA-420 Microphone
RA-RTA420

The RTA-420 is an ideal budget-friendly measurement mic. It’s a great choice if you’re a student, just starting out with system measurement, an established pro looking for a backup mic, or putting together a "B" rig. It’s also a cost-effective solution for multi-mic measurement setups. The RTA-420 offers very respectable frequency response, heavy-gauge steel construction, and measurement performance to rival high-end microphones costing many times more.
The RTA-420 has a relatively low maximum SPL, so it is not ideal for critical or concert-level SPL measurement applications, however it is still capable of generating accurate data at modest levels. Where critical SPL measurement is an important factor, consider purchasing at least one microphone that is better suited for SPL measurement and reserve the RTA-420’s for your spatial frequency response measurements.
The Rational RTA-420 comes with a mic clip and a bright yellow windscreen, which is great for spotting your mic in dark venues. It also includes a custom-designed soft carrying case that accommodates and organizes 2 microphones plus accessories.

NOTE: The Rational RTA-420 is PIN 3 HOT and requires the 10mm calibrator adapter for use with the iSEMcon SC-1 Microphone calibrator.

Key Features:

  • Capsule: ¼” Electret Condenser (housing diameter at capsule: 10mm)
  • Polar Pattern: Omnidirectional
  • Frequency Response Characteristic: Diffuse Field (Random Incidence)
  • Frequency Range: 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz
  • Nominal Sensitivity: 7 mV/Pa, +/-3 dB typical
  • Operating Voltage: 9-52V DC Phantom Power
  • Max SPL: approx. 110dB (1 kHz @ 1% THD)

WHAT'S IN THE BOX?

  • 1 RTA-420 Microphone
  • 1 soft-sided dual-mic carrying case
  • 1 mic clamp
  • 1 windscreen

Rational Acoustics RTA-420 Microphone with calibration files
RA-RTA420-CAL

The RTA-420 with Calibration Files are individually measured and serialized versions of the popular RTA-420. The calibration files are delivered via an included serialized thumb drive, or they can be retrieved online via the RTA-420 Microphone Correction Curve Database by entering the serial number of the microphone. The Calibration file consists of 2 frequency response correction curves (free field narrow band and 1/3 Oct) and a detailed PDF report. RTA-420 Calibration files are serial number specific; they are not interchangeable with any RTA-420.

Rational Acoustics "Noise Stick 2" Pink Noise Generator
RA-NZSTK2

The Noise Stick II is hand built in the USA exclusively for Rational Acoustics, sparing no detail for quality and reliability. It features such niceties as hand matched transistors, 1% tolerance resistors and a Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) random number generator that provides a pseudorandom signal with excellent statistical properties and without any obvious, audible repeats. The output of the Noise Stick's random number generator drives a hand tuned filter bank that delivers a pink spectrum that is nominally flat within +/- 0.5 dB from 30Hz to 20kHz on a 1/3-octave analyzer.
We didn't skimp on the outside either. The sleek, compact design is unobtrusive and fits easily into mic cases and gear bags. The housing for the Noise Stick is  made from sturdy machined anondized aluminum to protect the electronics from shock and increase its crush strength. Prototype test units were found to work just fine after being dropped from two stories onto a concrete surface and run over by a car, although we wouldn't recommend doing this to yours (on purpose).  And a new, blue LED on the endcap provides visual confirmation that the unit is seeing phantom power and thus, operational.
